I am AR Rahman’s sister and GV Prakash’s mother. That is the part everyone knows. I was born Kanchana but became Raihanah. I have grown and learnt and thrived.
As a child, I was never treated as the eldest. I was always a laid back person and was raised in a musical family. My Ajja used to do Bhajan in Mylapore temple and Appa was an arranger, conductor and a Man Friday for many music directors. We started learning music quite early in life. Appa put me in piano classes under the guidance of Dhanraj Master who taught legends like Illayaraja and Vidyasagar but the room was dusty and I was very sensitive, so I stopped going.
Appa always kept a strong hand on our spending but bought land for all of us. The first time he bought a house, it was made of salt water. During the rains, we used to catch the water in pots and pans. I was ten when he passed away. Today, I live on land he bought. It makes me feel connected.

Raihanah (also known as Rayhanah) is an Indian playback singer and composer for films. She is the sister of A. R. Rahman and mother of G. V. Prakash Kumar and Bhavani Sre. Her first song being Malle Malle from the movie Chocolate for which the composer was music director Deva and produced by Madesh and directed by Venkatesh. She collaborated with A. R. Rahman on a song for the score of the award-winning Kannathil Muthamittal in 2005. The most recent song she has sung is Saarattu Vandiyila from Kaatru Veliyidai for which the director is Maniratnam. She also sang Balleilakka along with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and Benny Dayal in the movie Sivaji. She has also sung various songs in Kannada and Telugu. She has composed for more than 6 tamil movies and has composed one song in a Malayalam movie Vasanthathinde kanal vazhigalil.
