It seems like every time you turn around, there’s another Russian pianist making his or her American debut, complete with plenty of advance platitudes about how persecuted the conditions were back in the homeland, and how at last pianist X is free to make the music that he or she has always wanted to make. More often than not, the publicity and melodrama far outweigh the actual talent level of pianist X.
Anatol Ugorski, clearly, is the exception. Seen by the Soviet Communists as a conspirator in the decadent ways of the West because he championed contemporary music there, Ugorski was shipped off to accompany schoolchildren in singing classes. In the wake of the fall of the Berlin wall, Ugorski defected to Germany in 1990, after he and his family found themselves harassed and threatened by an anti-Jewish hate group.
The 51-year-old Ugorski was, at long last, making his American debut Thursday evening at Ravinia, the centerpiece of which was the Beethoven “Diabelli” Variations, one of a handful of works he has now recorded that have just been released on the Deutsche Grammaphon label. MAYUKO MIYATA was born in Kanagawa, Japan, and started learning piano at the age of 5. Having won several competitions during her youth, she decided to move to Europe, the homeland of classical music, when she was 18.
She began her piano studies at the “Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock” under Professor Bernd Zack. She also studied musical accompaniment with Professor Christian de Bruyn and gained two years of experience as an opera répétiteur. Her love for Chopin’s music took her to Poland for one year, where she studied under Professor Lidia Grychtołówna and immersed herself in Chopin’s piano pieces.
Mayuko later returned to Germany and completed her studies (Künstlerische Ausbildung) with top honours at the Rostock University of Music and Theatre in 2007. She continued a post-graduate study in Piano Chamber Music with Professor Stefan Imorde and Mario Alarcón, completing the program in 2011 at the top of the class. Mayuko further pursued a Master’s Course working with internationally acclaimed artists such as Elisabeth Leonskaja, Anatol Ugorski, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydon, and Kevin Kenner.
