Bright young spark, then 2 luminous legends

AHMEDABAD: Imagine an epic a day for nearly two weeks — that sounds like the prescription handed out to Homer by a cruel muse who is unimpressed with his “The Iliad” as well as “The Odyssey”. But that is what Saptak administers to rasikas for 13 days, as a classical stalwart descends on the stage each night, making the mythical muses as vivid a presence as marigold 2 of Saptak, on Wednesday, was designed as one of the only two exceptions to the new three-baithak format. The traditional four-baithak schedule has been pruned; the second exception is expected to occur on Day 6.
On Wednesday, three epic renditions were expected: from sitar notable Vidushi Manju Mehta, the guardian of the Saptak legacy; flute legend Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia; and the doyenne of vocalists, Begum Parveen Sultana.
But Mehta dropped her recital. “It is very cold these days and I did not want to delay the programmes of Hari ji and Parveen ji,” Mehta told TOI. “Had it been some other performer, the recital could not have been cancelled. But I had no trouble in deciding to step aside.”
Mehta’s graciousness seemed to have brightened the creative light in Jayateerth Mevundi, the opening act. “He blew away the audience, he was astonishing!” said Prafull Anu
