Leta Hong Fincher
Leta Hong Fincher is a journalist and scholar who has written for the New York Times, the Guardian and Ms. Magazine. She is the author of Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China. Her new book, published this summer by Verso, Betraying Big Brother: The Feminist Awakening in China, illuminates China’s burgeoning feminist movement as it comes into conflict with the country’s authoritarian government.

James Wilson I wanted to ask you about the history of feminism in China.
Leta Hong Fincher The parallels between the new emergence of a feminist movement in China and what happened at the turn of the century, over 110 years ago, are quite striking to me. I write about the republican revolution – and not just about the overthrow of the Qing dynasty, which happened in 1911, but years before when there were some incredibly imaginative, prescient and brilliant feminists in their own right. Qiu Jin was one who is quite well-known. There’s a statue erected to her in Hangzhou. She was a revolutionary feminist beheaded for plotting the overthrow of the Qing empire in 1907.
