Just days before turning sweet16, the Schinkel Pavillon celebrates a milestone 15th birthday in retrospect with an anniversary mailing.
It is with great joy that Nina Pohl and her team look back on 15 years of not only exhibitions and performances, but also lectures, screenings, concerts, talks, and interventions realized by over artists and countless supporters.
The Schinkel Pavillon was built in the garden of the Kronprinzenpalais in From until , the Kronprinzenpalais housed the “Gallery of the Living”, a section of the Nationalgalerie Berlin and the world’s first institutional presentation of contemporary art, which served as one of the key models for the founding of the MoMA in New York and other contemporary art museums around the world.
In , the then-abandoned Pavillon of the Kronprinzenpalais’ ensemble was opened as a showcase for contemporary art. Ever since, the Schinkel Pavillon has acted as a platform for experimental and boundary-pushing artistic practice and discourse, while preserving and nurturing the octagonal architectural monument. Invited artists often create newly commissioned, site-specific installations, which almost always address current socio-political questions.
